Dr. Neil Martin

Director of International Development

Behavior Analyst Certification Board

Dr. Martin has been working as a behaviour analyst (as a clinician, academic, supervisor and researcher), since 1990. He received his PhD from the University of Reading (UK) in 1998 and became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in 2002. He was among the first handful of BCBAs in the UK and he was one of the 'ABA Lecturer's Co-operative' that developed the first BACB-approved course sequence in the UK, and the first outside the US.

After working within academia at the University of Kent, Dr. Martin worked independently for many years teaching on a number of BCBA/BCaBA course sequences and helping to establish others around the world, supervising students and consulting to numerous organisations and families both in the UK and internationally.


Dr. Martin has published research in journals such as the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, The Behavior Analyst, Research in Developmental Disabilities and the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, and he has special interests in the use of technology, media and software related to teaching and research.


Dr. Martin was one of the international subject matter experts that last reviewed the BACB Task List and he was also one of the subject matter experts that generated the BACB Autism Task List and the BACB Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analysts.

In April 2015 Dr. Martin became the BACB’s Director of International Development to help advance the BACB's global mission and vision and to expand the number of behavior analysts and training courses worldwide. He lives in London.

Applied Behaviour Analysis and Behavioural Intervention for Autism


This presentation will make the case for the importance of scientifically evaluated interventions in general, and behavioural intervention for autism in particular. A brief review of the peer-reviewed scientific evidence for behavioural intervention will be provided, and an overview of contemporary behavioural intervention for autism will be described. The distinction between behavioural intervention for autism, as one of many applications of the science of behaviour analysis, and the science itself will be highlighted, and the importance of appropriate and thorough academic and experiential requirements to provide any such intervention will be stressed.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to give examples of the research evidence supporting behavioural intervention for autism.

2. Participants will be able to discriminate between applied behaviour analysis and its application to individuals with autism (behavioural intervention for autism - BIA).

3. Participants will be able to articulate some of the important components of contemporary BIA.

4. Participants will be able to tact the important elements of being an appropriately trained behaviour analyst.
